Colorfly C4 Pro - the world's first pocket Hi-Fi - Best Portable Music Player

In this age of portable digital music, the iPod has transformed the way people listen to music on the move, with it's library of music at your fingertips, and its great usability. Unfortunately the most important feature, good sound quality, has taken a back seat in recent years. What the serious music lover wants is a digital music player with true audiophile sound quality. The new Colorfly Pocket Hi-Fi C4 Pro is designed to rectify this need, incorporating as it does a number of features aimed to give no-compromise sound quality.

On opening the box one is struck by the fine build quality. There is no cheap plastic case on this; the player is cocooned in a beautiful hard wood case, giving it a luxury feel, as well as making it virtually bomb-proof. The styling is best described as Steam-Punk, and I mean that in a good way... if Isambard Kingdom Brunel wanted a portable player, this is the one he would buy or design.

The Wooden cover opens to reveal the player itself, which again is beautifully built, with the display and controls easily accessible on the front panel. Connectivity is excellent with a mini-jack for headphone use, a 1/4” jack for connecting the Pocket Hi-Fi to an amplifier, plus a usb connection. An unusual, but welcome, feature is the provision of digital inputs and outputs, allowing the player to be used a a DAC or upsampler.
Internally the player has a 32G memory, and the ability to playback CD quality WAV files, and FLAC files, up to 24bit/192khz, making the Colorfly fully compatible with high-resolution audio downloads, and FLAC rips from DVD-A discs. The internal componant quality is on a parr with that seen in a standalone CD player, and it is clear from that the designers have sound quality as a priority.

For the listening tests we ripped some CDs at 16bit/44.1khz, plus loaded some hi-rez audio from The Beatles at 24bit/44.1khz, and some free downloads at 24/96, and we listened both through some high quality headphones, and a high end Hi-Fi.

The CD rips were reproduced to an extremely high standard, far surpassing the quality of the iPod we used as a reference, giving a clarity and musicality normally only found from Hi-Fi seperates. Treble was clear and extended, the midrange was clean, giving good articulation to vocals, whilst at the bass end things were punchy, deep and tuneful.

Moving onto the hi-rez material, the Colorfly easily showed off the extra detail available with those extra bits, with even vintage material such as 'Revolver' sounding like it could have been recorded today, and easily surpassing the already excellent performance of the player on the CD rip of the same album.
The quality of sound was such, that we forgot we were listening to a portable device, and just got on with enjoying the music.

In conclusion I can highly recommend the Colorfly Pocket Hi-Fi to anyone after a superb sounding portable music player, that is easily good enough to double as a source of hi-rez music for your Big Hi-Fi. Plus it looks funky!

New Elipson Planet Range - Hi-FI Speakers and System

Founded in 1938, French brand Elipson are renowned for making hi-fi equipment that is both technically
innovative and visually stunning. Their latest products, looked at here, continue that tradition with typical Gallic flair and style, but with a big dose of
21st century tech.

First out the box was the CD system, simply called 'The Music Center MC1'. Hewn from solid aluminium disc, this unit contains a CD player, DAB/DAB+/FM tuner, a 120wpc amplifier, plus wireless connectivity for computer/iPod music. Despite the name, it's about as far removed from the 1970's music centre as one can get. Circular in form, to mirror
the shape of the CD, The Music Centre features a 24/96 DAC to extract the most information from CDs, and includes a B&O Icepower amplifier to give a clean,
powerful signal to the speakers, all with the benefit of economical power consumption.

Elipson has designed a stylish range of loudspeakers to partner this system: the Planet L, and its little brother the Planet M. These spherical speakers can be used on their own, or in conjuction with the matching subwoofer - the Planet Sub - to give some deep bass heft. Both the L and M speakers are available in black, white or red finishes, making them easy to blend in with a wide range of decors. The main difference between the Planet L and M speakers is that the L features a larger cabinet and drive units, making it ideal for larger rooms, or for those who do not want to use the Planet Sub. The smaller Planet M is ideal for wall or shelf mounting, and when used with the Planet Sub makes a discreet full range speaker system. The globe-like enclosures are shaped to eliminate standing waves, and hence reduce distortion, giving both speakers a clean pure sound.

We tested the Planet L speakers in 2 channel and 2.1, with the Sub, using the Music Center as a source; in addition to the Music Center with Planet M and
the Sub as a 2.1 stereo system. We also set up a home cinema system and auditioned both the Planet L and Planet M in a 5.1 surround sound situation, using
the Planet Sub. The Music Center, using a pair of Planet L gave a very clean, clear sound when we played our copy of the R.E.M classic 'Out of Time', making it easy to distinguish the different textures and sounds of the predominantly acoustic instrumentation. Tonal colours were superbly reproduced making for a very natural sound. Imaging was excellent, with Michael Stipe's voice positioned nicely in the centre, with the rest of the band believably positioned around him. The treble was found to be crisp and clear, with a tuneful and melodic bass end. The Planet Sub added depth to the bass, without spoiling the tunefulness, and made the overall sound more rounded. The Sub integrated well with the Planet Ls, making for a stylish, yet serious sounding, full range speaker system.

At SightandSoundUK we also tried the Music Center with a number of other manufacturers' speakers, and found it to be an excellent sounding piece of equipment in its own
right, and one of the best sounding integrated systems we have had the pleasure to audition. Next up, we auditioned the Planet M and Planet Sub, again using
the Music Center. As we expected this combo sounded similar in many respects to the Planet L, but did not give quite the scale or dynamics as its bigger brother. On its own terms, however, it is a superb sounding little speaker, giving a much more realistic and enjoyable sound than other lifestyle systems. It's the ideal speaker for those who want a great sounding system that does not dominate the room.

In surround mode both Elipson speakers gave great results, with film dialogue being articulate, and sound effects being steered effortlessly around the room. The Planet Sub came into its own here, really giving some power to the more explosive scenes of the films we watched. With all 5 speakers being identical, the consistancy of sound as voices and sound effects moved around the room was superb. We tried some 5.1 SACD and DVD-Audio discs, and the quality of sound we heard in 2 channel was transferred effortlessly to the surround format.

In conclusion - for their excellent engineering, sound quality, stunning looks and ease of use - these Elipson items are highly recommended.

5 Stars for High-End Tannoy Definition DC10T

Tannoy as one of the longest established manufacturers in British Hi-Fi, have had a long and proud tradition of producing high quality loudspeakers since the dawn of Hi-Fi. Tannoy are keeping that heritage alive with their current range of loudspeakers, including the Definition range, of which the DC10T, featured here, is the flagship model.

At over 1 metre tall the DC10T is by no means a compact loudspeaker, but thanks to its smart contemporary styling, and superb quality of finish it is sure to look good in most settings. The DC10T is hand built, with a heavily braced birch-ply cabinet, that is tapered towards the rear, to
eliminate standing waves, which would otherwise colour the sound. The cabinet is available in two hand finished veneers, high gloss cherry, or dark walnut, as well as piano black. The quality of construction is certainly fitting for a speaker of this class, and even shames a number of far more expensive rivals. Fitted into the cabinet is a 10” version of Tannoys famous Dual Concentric drive unit, constructed from treated paper pulp, which at its centre has a titanium tweeter, featuring a new 'wideband' tweeter, which is ideal for reproducing the extended treble available from SACD and DVD-Audio. The tweeter also has Tannoys 'Tulip waveguide' to give excellent high frequency imaging. The lower drive unit is 10” bass unit, again made from treated paper pulp, to give a consistent match with the dual concentric main driver.

As befits a speaker of this class the DC10T contains a number of features designed to maximise performance, including a DCT treated, minimalist, crossover, and high quality internal wiring. As mentioned, the cabinet is heavily braced, and provides an inert mount for the drive units.

Around the back the Tannoy has provision for bi-wiring or bi-amping, plus a fifth speaker terminal for driver grounding.
In terms of build, finish, and technology, the DC10T is a stunning example of British craftsmanship at its best, but how do they sound?
In a word, superb! We first tried them with 'This World' a track from the band Deadwood Dog, and the big Tannoys effortlessly reproduced the predominantly acoustic instrumentation including bouzouki, of this up and coming band, with ease.

The bass was deep yet tuneful, whilst the different instruments were easy to differentiate in the mix, whilst vocals were reproduced with superb clarity.

Moving onto Elgar's Cello concerto, the DC10Ts gave a very accurate image, making it easy to visualise the positioning of the different sections of the orchestra, whilst the cello itself was given superb clarity, making it a breeze to follow every subtle inflection of the playing.
As a complete contrast, the classic “Paranoid” album by Black Sabbath was played back with the bass weight and power that this music demands, but at the same time the vocal clarity was superb, and each instrument was reproduced as it should. An ideal speaker for high level rock music, but one that is equally at home with more acoustic styles of music.

In conclusion the Tannoy DC10T fully justifies its price, both because of it's class leading performance, and its superb build, finish and styling.

The Vita Audio range - small audio with a big sound

On a nice summers day, nothing beats relaxing outside, with a cool drink, whilst listening to the radio, and with the new models of
radio from Vita Audio, this has never been more enjoyable.

The baby of the Vita range is the R1 Deluxe Table radio,
which can pick up FM (with RDS), DAB and also the new DAB+,
making it future proof. It's retro styled case is available in three finishes, Rich Walnut, Dream White and Midnight Black,
all which are very attractive.

In addition to the above, Vita have just launched a special version of the R1, the R1 Limited Edition,
which is available in a beautiful yellow piano lacquer,
and is limited to only 2000 worldwide, each individually numbered, and so is sure to become a future collectors item.
Enhancing the desirability of the R1 are a pair of handy accessories, the "Backpack" which is a rechargeable power unit, and the "Carrypack"
a leather carrying case, both of which when used with the R1 make into a truly portable high quality radio, ideal for use on the beach,
in the garden, or just around the house. It also features a line input, so one can enjoy music from an MP3 player through the quality speaker in the R1.
The sound quality from the R1's single speaker proved to be rich and full, with excellent clarity,
and fine projection of voices, which is just what you want from a compact radio.

The next model up, the R2i,
builds on the strengths of the R1, but adds stereo speakers, and an i-Pod dock, two line inputs,
which make it ideal for use in a bedroom with TV sound, and a games console, plus a remote control is supplied.
Like the R1, the R2i is available in Rich walnut, Dream White, and Midnight Black finishes.
Being mains powered the R2i is ideal for use in the kitchen, study, bedroom, or indeed anyplace that cannot accommodate a full size hi-fi.
In use the R2i gave superb results both from the inbuilt radio and the i-pod dock, providing a room filling sound,
with excellent stereo seperation, for such a compact unit.

The flagship of the range is the R4i,
which is a full hi-fi system packed into one stylish case, featuring CD, DAB,
DAB+, FM, and an integral i-Pod dock. As well as the two stereo speakers, a subwoofer is built into the unit. Like the R2i,
this also comes complete with a remote control, but with a twist. The rotary control mounted in the top of the R4i,
lifts out and becomes an easy to use remote control. When not in use, it simply slots back into the top of the unit.

The R4i is available in the same finishes as the R2i, plus there is also a new limited edition, which has just been launched.
This is available in a Sparkling Graphite finish, and has an improved CD drive, enhanced circuitry in the tuner section, and
upgraded audio circuitry. As well as being beautiful to behold, the sonic upgrades also make this a superb sounding system.
On listening, the R4i was found to give a fantastic performance with a wide range of music, and in terms of clarity, musicality
and bass response, was not found to be wanting. In fact the quality of this system is so good, it is a viable alternative
to some micro-systems, when space is at a premium.

In conclusion these new systems from Vita are superb sounding, excellently constructed items, and great value for money.
Why not find out for yourself at Sight and Sound, where they are all available for auditioning.

Yamaha RX-V671 - New AV Receiver tipped for awards in review

Yamaha, as the pioneers of home cinema back in the 1980s and '90s, have a reputation second to none when it comes to A/V amplifiers, and the new RX-V671 7.1 Channel Receiver looks set to continue this trend.

First impressions are excellent: the receiver is smartly styled, and as is usual for Yamahas of this class, very solidly constructed. The front panel has a clean layout, with a good selection of controls - although the supplied high quality remote control is the primary control interface - and is neatly styled and well finished.

Round the back, the RX-V671 has a comprehensive set of connections, including an impressive 5 HDMI inputs (there is also an additional HDMI on the front, which is handy for portable devices), plus a connection for one of Yamaha's i-Pod docks. Users of older video sources are well catered for with 2 component video, and 4 composite video, connections provided. For users who want to enjoy music, Yamaha have provided 2 line level inputs. Thoughtfully, a phono stage is also fitted, to allow turntable connection.

The most interesting connection is a network socket, which allows the RX-V671 to be connected to a network. This gives streaming from Napster, and music files from PC (WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC), as well access to Internet Radio. A front panel USB connection allows connection of i-Pod and i-Phone.

The receiver is 3D ready, and able to decode all DVD and Blu-Ray audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio.
With a rated power output of 150wpc into 4ohms, or 90wpc into 8ohms, the RX-V671 is capable of easily driving a wide range on loudspeakers, from compact sub/satellite systems, to large floorstanders.

The RX-V671 proved very simple to set up, thanks to its well laid out remote control, and easy to follow on-screen menus. This receiver features Yamaha's highly regarded YPAO room and speaker equalisation system. Simply place the supplied microphone in the listening positions, follow the on-screen instructions, and within minutes the receiver and speakers are optimised for the listening room.

Once set up, the RX-V671 was put through it's paces with a wide range of material, both films and music. The main film used was the Blu-Ray of 'Hot Fuzz', which features a wide range of audio effects, from quiet naturalistic moments, through to full-bore shoot outs. The scene where Sgt. Angel first visits the village pub allowed the RX-V671 to display its ability to generate a realistic sound field; dialogue was crisp and clear, and the background pub sounds of chit-chat, clinking glasses, and the pub games machine filled the room superbly, without dominating the dialogue. It really felt like you were in a busy rural pub.

The film climaxes with an over the top, all action shoot-out, and here the Yamaha was equally at home. The crack of gunshots flew around the room, and the blast of heavier weapons showed that the RX-V671 can be a real bass-hound when needed; the subwoofer provided a thunderous performance. All in all, a very impressive movie performer.

Moving onto music from CD, the receiver proved to be a very tuneful, detailed and musical performer. The R.E.M album 'Document', has a fairly cluttered mix, but the Yamaha was able to bring out detail buried in the music. Bass guitar was deep, yet dexterous, and gave a great underpinning to the powerful rockers, whilst the midrange quality of the RX-V671 allowed Michael Stipe's vocals to come over clearly, also giving a good clear rendition of the various layers of instrumentation.

As a contrast, we tried some gentler fare, in the form of the Dylan classic 'Blood on the Tracks', which features a stripped down, mainly acoustic band. The RX-V671 projected Dylan's voice well, giving his sometimes nasal vocals a level of clarity, that lesser receivers would struggle to give. The acoustic guitars and piano were conveyed with a superb sense of realism, whilst up in the treble regions, Dylan's harmonica was clearly reproduced, but without sounding grating. As a music maker, the RX-V671 is a superb performer with a wide range of music.

In conclusion, the Yamaha RX-V671 is a fantastic sounding receiver, able to do justice to everything from the most complex film soundtracks, to the simplest of guitar/vocal recordings, and will form the centrepiece of a great system for both films and music.

Denon AVR-2312 - An impressive new AV Receiver

A new AV receiver from Denon is always something to look forward to, and the AVR-2312 does not disappoint.

On unpacking we found a solidly constructed, attractively styled unit that keeps up Denon's tradition for excellent build quality, and such nice touches as the anti-vibration chassis set it apart from many of its rivals. The front panel features an easily legible display, flanked by two impressive controls, for input selection and volume control. Both controls felt nice and solid in use, which again shows the fine build quality of this AVR. Other, more minor controls are easily accessible, being positioned under the display. The AVR-2312 features a comprehensive remote control, which has everything on it to operate the unit.

The back panel is heavily populated with socketry, both for audio and video, with an impressive six HDMI inputs (there is also a seventh, handily mounted on the front panel) , which are are 3D and HD audio compliant. There is also a wide range of analogue video inputs and these can be converted by the AVR-2312 to full 1080P. The AVR-2312 can be configured as a conventional 5.1 or 5.2 system, with bi-amped front speakers, all the way up to a 7.2 speaker configuration, for that full on cinema experience. This receiver also features the new Dolby Pro Logic IIz system, which allows for two extra front speakers, positioned above the screen which gives added 'height' to the soundstage. With all these speakers to drive, the AVR-2312 needs to produce a lot of power, and this it does, giving 105wpc.
An receiver this feature packed could be difficult to set up, but thanks to it's clear on screen display, navigating the different menus is a breeze and Denons Audyssey MultiEQ XT microphone auto calibration system, takes all the hard work out of setting the speaker levels and room equalisation.

Once up and running, the Denon proved itself to a great performer with films. The soundstage was all enveloping with a fine sense of power, yet the Denon could also be delicate and subdued, if the material demanded it. Our test disc of 'District 9' demonstrated that the AVR-2312 is as equally at home with demanding action sequences, such as the setpiece fight between our hero, and the films villain, as it is with the domestic scenes set in his family home. Dialogue was always clearly projected, as were the many subtle sound effects that this film features.

The AVR-2312 also proved itself to be just as adept with music, as it is with films. Denon's Hi-Fi heritage has paid dividends here, and this receiver is a very musical performer, reproducing the operatic dramatics of Brittens 'Peter Grimes' with a real clarity that really involved the listener in the music. Changing over to the metallic stylings of Judas Priest showed that the AVR-2312, knows how to get down and party, with its high power output and gutsy bass throb really making this music Rock!

In conclusion the Denon AVR2312 is a highly specified, well built piece of equipment, that is both a pleasure to operate and to listen to. If you are in the market for a new AVR, it should certainly be at the top of your shortlist

New Denon AV Receivers - AVR1912 Amazing Performance, Amazing Price

The AVR-1912, the new
Home Cinema Receiver from noted audio specialist Denon, is the latest in a long line of quality receivers from this brand.
On opening the box, first impressions, as always from Denon, are very positive. The unit is solidly built,
is smartly styled with a curvaceous front front panel, and round the back has an impressive array of connections.
The front panel has a good clear display, flanked by chunky source selection and volume knobs, with some minor
controls below the display. The majority of functions are available from the comprehensive remote control, although
there is also a remote control app available which turns your iPad, iPhone, or ipod Touch into a handy R/C.

Denon AVR-1912 Rear Panel

On the rear of the unit are a massive six, (yes six! go count 'em!), HDMi inputs, which is very impressive for
a unit at this price level, and one HDMi output for connecting to your screen.
Older products are catered for by the provision of a component video input, s-Video, and a couple of composite
connections. On the audio side the AVR-1912 has five anologue, and two digital inputs.
This new receiver has a wide range of important features including 3D support, decoding of all HD audio types,
and most notably a number of network functions. These include internet radio, network audio and photo streaming,
and depending on the country, support for Last-FM, Napster and Flickr.
As an added bonus the AVR-1912 supports Airplay wireless steaming from i-devices and i-tunes.
With a power output of 90wpc into 8 Ohms, and 125wpc into a 6 Ohm load, the AVR-1912 is suitable
for use with a wide range of loudspeakers.

Denon AVR-1912 iPod App

In use the Denon is very easy to set up, thanks to it's microphone auto set-up, and Audyssey MultEQ XT system,
which adjusts the EQ of the receiver to give the best results in any room, and with different speakers.
Thanks to these we soon had it up and running in our listening room, and were ready to give it a listen.
On a wide variety of material the AVR-1612 proved itself to be versatile performer with both films
and music. With "Iron Man 2", the sounds of battle at the race circuit came over with real power,
and a fine sense of detail. The surround effects were all-enveloping giving a great feeling of involvement,
but not at the expense of clarity, which made the dialogue easy to follow in even the noisiest moments.
During quieter moments Denon showed a fine of finesse and clarity of sound.
Moving to some music the Denon was a dynamic and detailed performer with the Iron Maiden classic "The Trooper",
giving the music a great sense of rhythm and highlighting the performance to great effect.
Acoustic music was presented with excellent clarity, and overall the Denon proved to be a musical and involving listen.
The Denon AVR-1912, in conclusion, is a great performing, well equipped receiver, that is certainly one of the class leaders. Very highly recommended.

Monitor Audio have always been a speaker brand that people know for the quality and performance of their loudspeakers.
Monitor Audio Bronze BX2 are a perfect example of this quality - winning Product of the Year in the latest What Hi-Fi annual awards, these
medium sized bookshelf / standmount speakers are neatly finished, front ported (which allows placement closer to a wall) and available in Walnut,
Black, Natural Oak and Rosemah finishes.

These excellent speakers match well with the majority of Hi-Fi electronics and sound great no matter what style of music you prefer. More importantly, these
neat speakers are a fraction of the price of some mid-range speakers from other brands. The stunning detail, soundstage and imagery they reveal is a testament to the

All in all we recommend these speakers as being the best and most refined in their price range.
